I was moved to found the Dorothy H Chambers
Stroke Foundation, Inc. after my Grandmother who had been a
victim of a stroke finally lost her battle. I began to research
the number of individuals who suffer from strokes on a daily
basics and I was astonished by my discovery. I felt compelled to
do something.
When my grandmother had her stroke in Illinois, she was sent to
a nursing home for therapy. At the time of admittance she was
fortunate to be able to walk on her walker, speak slowly, and
feed her self. My family and I was very optimistic regarding her
recovery. After being there for three weeks when I went to go
visit her, to my surprise she had lost over 70lbs. She was not
able to do any thing for herself. She was given a total of
22pills a day. She was being wheeled to the dining room area of
the facility, by a window where she sat until the end of the
day. I will never forget the sadness in her eyes and as she cried
when she saw me. I could not believe how she was being
mistreated.
My family and I decided to move her here to Atlanta with me. We
converted my home for her and my grandfather. I quit my job to
become her primary care giver. I had no medical training to care
for her which made it very difficult for me. It was very hard in
the beginning. I can remember when I would make a mistake I
would just sit on her bed, she and I would start laughing until
our laughter turned into tears. Then we started all over again.
She began to receive her therapy and in (3) months, she
recovered to full capacity. She was able to move to her new home
in Alabama.
My grandmother came to visit with me for two weeks and we had
the best time ever. I took my grandparents back to
there home on Mother’s Day 2006. During the night she suffered
another stroke and she passed away a week later. I lost not only
my grandmother but my best friend. Her memory will always live
on with me helping others to survive what ultimately took her
life. A Stroke.
Best Regards,
